What the anode rod protects
Water and dissolved minerals create conditions that can corrode metal. The anode rod is made from a more reactive material, so it is gradually consumed instead of leaving the tank steel as the first target.
Once much of the rod is gone, it offers less sacrificial material. That does not mean every older heater can be saved by installing a new rod; the tank must still be evaluated for leaks and deterioration.
Water softeners can change water chemistry and may increase anode consumption in some installations. That relationship is a reason to inspect—not a reason to assume a fixed replacement interval for every home.

Will a new anode rod repair a leaking tank?
No. An anode rod is preventive protection for a sound tank. It does not seal corrosion damage or repair an active tank leak.
Why can an anode rod be difficult to remove?
Factory-tight threads, corrosion, limited overhead clearance, and nearby piping can make removal difficult. Excessive force without supporting the heater can also create additional problems.
Does a water softener mean I need a different anode rod?
A softener can affect anode consumption, but replacement selection should consider the heater manufacturer, existing rod, water conditions, and any odor concerns.
